Cillit Bang

There's a new commercial on TV for a product called 'Cillit Bang'. It reeks of a spoof ad. It's done in the cheesiest of styles, usually reserved for American TV. And what's up with that name? Why would you call a surface cleaner Cillit Bang? It's certainly provoked a lot of discussion in this household.

I'm thinking it's either some sort of viral/sneak campaign for another brand of cleaner, which will be revealed in good time.. or it's a totally clueless company actually launching a new brand of kitchen cleaner. In either case, I guess it's working, because I'm talking about it..

(December 30, 2004: I'm turning off comments on this post - eventually. Thanks for keeping this thread fun guys :-))

I have searched for this product but with no luck, think it must be an April fool in October with a name like that!

Posted by: S.B at October 9, 2004 05:05 PM

i think that this ad is for somekind of market research or to see/gauge how the public reacts to this fictious product. Well, it has got us talking!!

Posted by: paula columbine at October 9, 2004 09:06 PM

Sadly, this may well be a real product - take a look at this press release from Reckitt Beckniser OK, it's in German but it does talk about it and there is another product in their range called Cillit. If anybody has ever seen German commercials, this level of cheesiness is not uncommon :)

Posted by: Tim at October 9, 2004 09:54 PM

Its true it exists, it is a teaser ad, but the brand cillit fear for is now cillit bang in uk. Brand owned by Reckitt Benckiser. So now you know.

Posted by: Jonathan at October 10, 2004 12:59 AM

Why would a company spend an awful lot of money advertising a product that no-one is going to ever see and they are not even advertising the true company behind it? Also - a clothing shop and a German company with cleaning products - I am even more confused?????

Posted by: Tracy at October 10, 2004 06:08 PM

I'm glad Barry and his bottle of Cillit has caused such a debate. I am now, however, in a position to put this thread to bed. I am one of the lucky ones who works in advertising and is often faced with a new product launch and a client which is unwillling to spend a shiny Euro on any new advertising. You are right to say that Cillit Bang is a German product (not Cillit Fear though) and is being launched across Europe to bolster RB's surface care range - currently only Dettol in the UK. RB is absolutely right to re-use the German execution (with some help from Barry) and save costs. Product launches are hugely expensive and most products require at least 85% availability before any large scale advertising campaign can be justified. Cillit will at first be taken by one supermarket chain then, probably within 6-9 months, be available in your local tesco and Sainsburys Karl.

Posted by: Andy at October 11, 2004 05:47 PM

Who in the world would call this product by such a stupid name. It must be a joke. Imagine going into a super market and asking for Cillit Bang. Can you imagine the looks from the staff who have not heard of the product. (if it exists that is)

Posted by: Jane at October 11, 2004 07:09 PM

I work for Tesco and am delighted to say we have Cillit Bang instore and it has already sold out. The product goes on promotion next week.

Posted by: Richard at October 11, 2004 07:24 PM

fantastic, have a look at the website, ingenious!

Posted by: Tiffps at October 12, 2004 07:32 AM

It is for real, my agency did it, oh the shame.

Posted by: copywriter at October 12, 2004 05:21 PM

The ad campaign is going so well that a) SHE didn't put it on HER list, nor on mine, b) neither of us looked for it, and c) we weren't aware we'd forgotten till tonight's commercial.

Well done the Ad agency....

Posted by: Alain Fenn at October 12, 2004 09:00 PM

Its not a spoof ad! .. i couldn't believe it either, but my mum had actually bought some! .. it made me laugh so.

Posted by: david at October 13, 2004 02:11 PM

I also found the advert hard to believe but thanks to you lot I'm inclined to believe it now. Well done.

Posted by: Harry at October 13, 2004 04:50 PM have all left your comments....for the people who said it is a real product.....where the hell can I get it? Its driving me nuts.....I NEED Cillit Bang!!! My life will never be the same without it....HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Julie at October 13, 2004 06:23 PM

I agree with "Julie" - I NEED CILLIT BANG.
My shower needs CILLIT BANG
My whole house and garden need CILLIT BANG

Posted by: Ros at October 13, 2004 07:18 PM

i can't find cillit bang anywhere. Has anyone seen it in any of the supermarkets?

Posted by: Rani at October 13, 2004 07:37 PM

I saw some empty shelf space with a price label for Cillit Bang (1.99) in my local Tesco.

Posted by: mark at October 13, 2004 07:56 PM

Unbelievably bizarre name but true. Visit and click on the corporate site. Pop cillit bang in the search box and you will find a number of references to it being launched in Europe. Can't see it keeping that name for long though!

Posted by: stu at October 13, 2004 08:45 PM

i too thought it was a joke - i saw the ad when i had just woken up from an early evening nap and thought i had been dreaming. will definitely give it a cillit in the next few bangs!

Posted by: Cillit Crawley at October 13, 2004 10:28 PM

Oh my god! This product really exists? I have put it on my shopping list this week and my husband thinks I've gone loopy. He hasn't seen the ads. They are so-ooo naff! It's got to be real and I WANT IT!!!!!!

Posted by: Liz at October 14, 2004 02:34 AM

I've never wanted a product so much in all my sad life.

Posted by: diana allen at October 14, 2004 07:46 AM

WOW - I'm so pleased I'm not the only one with this product on my mind. What a fantastic add campaign - who would have thought a cheesey ad for a crazy named product that can't be bought anywhere for love nor money (believe me I've tried) would have the whole country talking. Just for the record, so far I've tried to buy it at Tesco's and the Co-op to no avail. I am trying Asda tomorow. Wish me luck!

Posted by: Kath at October 14, 2004 12:19 PM

I also thought it was a joke. Bought it in Asda, but Wilkinson have it cheaper. Good cleaner, stupid name with a horrible smell. Needs a make-over already!

Posted by: Walnetcorp at October 14, 2004 01:32 PM

I have been had by the hype and am printing 100 of these - no joke. big bottle on the front, and barry scott slogan on the back. see them at

contact me at

nothing to do with that scottish t-shirt store OR the makers of cillit bang.

Posted by: barry scott at October 14, 2004 01:33 PM

I'm amazed Cillit has caused such a stir. And congratualtions to Nolan for spotting it is a spoof - very clever! For crying out loud, this product exists!! Just because it has an odd name and cheap ads doesn't imply that it's a spoof. And forget that cillitbang website - do you think that an urban clothes shop in Edinburgh could afford a national advertising campign???

This launch campaign is being handled by J.Walter Thompson. As far as I know the Budapest office created the initial 30 second spot which would then be tweaked by local offices. Could the anonymous copywriter back me up here?

Posted by: Andy at October 14, 2004 01:35 PM

Posted by: shut it bang at October 15, 2004 03:43 PM

I've found it! They have it in Tesco and Morrisons. Cost - around 2.50. Consumer no. 0845 7697079. I'm sure they can tell you when it'll be in a supermarket near you! Now enough people, get a grip - it's a cleaning product!

Posted by: What's all the fuss at October 17, 2004 03:59 PM

I have just bought a bottle of Cillit Bang from the Wilkinsons hardware shop in Halifax. It cost 1.97. It works a treat. The coin trick shown in the adverts is true. It cleaned my loose change in a matter of seconds and the sink came up a treat!

Posted by: Rick Stevens at October 17, 2004 06:18 PM

CILLIT BANG mate CILLIT BANG. i bought some from wilko's too it worked a treat cleaning up my circuit boards, i even used it to clean the stains off my teeth. NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED!!

Supposedly you can get it at Wilkinsons, which are all over the place. It's one of the cheapest places to get it too.

you want a decent excuse to change your bath fittings... go for it!
you don't want to waste your money for hydrochloric acid in a purple bottle... go for something else!

At last today I managed to purchase two bottles of this wonder cleaner at a price of 2.99 each. This was at Tescos in Whitfield near Dover. I have to say they were the last two bottles on the shelf. I have just tried them on my grouting, well there was no "Bang" or a "puff" not even a "Phutt" sorry Cillit Bang you are no wonder cleaner, more a whimper cleaner.

Posted by: auntymoo at December 9, 2004 05:47 PM

Well,I have tried Sainsburys, Tesco, Somerfield, Morrison, Safeway, Aldi, Lidle to name but a few and none of these chains stock it. Why advertise a product when you cannot purchase it anywhere.
