iMac G5 opinions

I'm considering getting an iMac G5 with the 20" screen. Any of my readers got one? The Mac Mini is working out green, but I've been looking for a combination of things.. much larger and faster hard drive, bigger screen, something more portable but not a notebook, wireless peripherals.. and, well, the iMac G5 solves everything in one hit. I'm going to go hit up some reviews, but I trust people who read this blog more than any review, so.. go nuts in the comments :)

No comments on the G5, but I can comment on that LCD. I have the Dell 2005FPW; I believe this is the same exact glass that Apple uses for their 20" at about half the price. I paid $430 for mine after rebate-watching the forums on AnandTech for a week.

I've been working last saturday with a 20" G5 iMac of a friend. Performance and display are very well but to my personal sense the fan is a little bit to load, especially since this machine stands right in front of you. I also had a G4 iMac two years ago but I sold it for the same reason and switched to a Power Book / Cinema 20" combination which work great for my concerns.

In my opinion Pete, you'd be better off getting a G5 PowerMac; why? Because I know what you are like, and in a years time you'll be saying the iMac is great, but you want more. So why not jump a step and go for the PowerMac?

On the positive side; both the PowerMac and iMac are easily upgradable/fixable by the customer.

Good points, Ed, but.. the iMac comes with a 20" screen (compared to £549 for a separate Apple 20") and, well, the Mac Mini is fine right now, but a little extra juice would be nice. A 2GHz G5 with a proper hard drive (instead of the uber-slow Mac Mini drive) should provide that boost.

The PowerMac G5 is good in many ways, but it's too big. I like small when it comes to appliances. I also like quiet, but that might be something I have to trade off. I still imagine the iMac G5 is quieter than the PowerMac though.
