As I suspected, it's all been a bit of a balls up. Sure, they banned fox hunting, in a sense, but when you start damaging people's ways of living, their professions, and their hobbies, people tend to find loopholes in the law.
Since they can't directly hunt with dogs anymore, hunts are going out with birds of prey. Surprisingly, an eagle owl can kill a fox, but it takes its time. So you chase the fox with the dogs till it's exhausted, then let the owl go in and painfully and slowly kill the tired creature. Or, as tends to be happening, a dog will "accidentally" kill a fox, but not under direct orders. That's allowed.
Let's repeal this silly law and rewrite it properly.
I don't get it. The hunters have guns, right? Why don't they shoot the fox?
Posted by: Tomas Jogin at September 29, 2005 08:14 AMI didn't want to drag the post out too much, but in the BBC news story it reports that they are, as well, shooting foxes. In the hunt they looked at, however, it seems dogs "inadvertently" killed foxes, which is "OK".
