So, where's the PowerBook?

Yes, I ended up ordering the PowerBook last week. Now I'm waiting for it to arrive. As those who've experienced the Apple Store will know, this can be an interesting wait.

The tracking on my order didn't work at all until today, when it was suddenly updated with four days' worth of notes:

I think you need a degree in logic to understand some of it. A flight was booked, the flight left (enough for it to get tagged on my order, anyway), yet the machine is still in Shanghai? Then there was some sort of network issue between the courier and Apple, and.. so on :) I just hope it's here by the 14th! *crosses fingers*

Oh man, I've been to Apple Stores in Shanghai. If their shipping center is anything like their stores, all you're going to get is an early-model Apple Newton, about six months from now. :)

Erm, not entirely sure why but *you* always seem to have delays and difficulties ordering from Apple online; whilst I've always had perfect service....

I wonder why...

Do you order from somewhere other than the Apple UK online store? Eg. Apple US or Apple China or something?

Nope, Apple UK :) http://www.apple.com/ukstore/ .. The service is fine, but the delivery is slooow.

The problem is because the computers tend to come from places like Shanghai (this PowerBook) or Taiwan (the iBook) and have to be merged in transit with other items I've bought on the same order.

Still, I can't complain too much, I got almost £200 off from using my Egg card with the cashback :)

Looks like I might have to use my iBook on my three days in London though.. eugh.

Heh; well I find it strange because everything I've ever bought from Apple UK online has come from Ireland; and arrived via London City Airport in Docklands. :/

That might be because my items have tended to be Built To Order items.

My iBook had to have an Airport card added (as it was an option at the time, not standard) and a larger hard drive so had to come from the factory. The PowerBook is pretty much stock, but with the free option of a 100GB 7200rpm drive as opposed to the 120GB 5400rpm drive.. so probably became a Build To Order too, and had to come from the factory.

Ah yes, I never get BtO items, I add the bits myself; so perhaps that's why.

It turns out the way the tracking is formatted is a bit lame. The machine made it to Europe, but it still shows its location as being the original supplier.. "Apple Shanghai". So, currently it's supposedly at the "EDC" (European Distribution Centre?) in the Netherlands.

The Apple EDC in the Netherlands is also their main European repair centre. If anything goes wrong, always get it fixed by those dudes, NOT the third party repair centre in Luton - which is run by a bunch of raving monkeys who've taken too many happy pills and not enough repair experience.
