I think the Nintendo DS is the coolest games machine I've ever bought. I originally bought it as an early Christmas present for Laura a couple of months ago, along with WarioWare and Yoshi Touch & Go.
I'd written off Nintendo ages ago as being a "kiddy's gaming company" but it turns out Nintendo are just about fun over technology. Most of the Nintendo games are a bit cutesy for me, but I can't deny that most of them are pretty fun, and the whole touchscreen thing on the DS works out really well.
I bought Laura Mario Kart DS for Christmas, and it turns out I've probably played it way more than her. It's insane. It has an online multiplayer mode, about six different game modes (including Gran Turismo style missions/tests), about eighteen characters, and features a bunch of great new tracks and a lot of the old school "retro" tracks from the SNES and GBA.
Well worth the buy. Definitely a present I've got as much enjoyment out of as Laura has ;-)
I've been pumped up about the Nintendo Revolution console! Their focus on fun-over-technology is definitely a cool strategy – one I wish other console developers would try. Let xbox and playstation battle it out over the technology wars, and when a winner is declared, neither will be a winner for me, because I still wont be able to play either console without feeling like an idiot. I'm in love with the idea of the Revolution’s controller -- one that doesn't require copious amounts of dexterity from your thumbs. I just cant use an xbox style controller to save my life, and I love pc games, but the newer consoles have never appealed to me because of the controllers.
