I found a hotel from the sky (Sunborn Yacht Hotel)

Sunborn Boat Hotel

Rod Drury's latest entry about potential knock-on effects of Google Earth inspired me to post about something that happened a few weeks ago.

I was looking for a hotel in the Docklands region of London (where all the skyscrapers are, basically) and wanted to make sure I chose somewhere with good access to public transport and which didn't look too shady to walk around at night.

Google Earth is a great tool for scoping out a location, so I gave it a shot. After checking out a few options, I began scrolling randomly around, and came across this rather interesting boat. I typed the name into Google and found The Sunborn Yacht Hotel. It's the first custom built yacht hotel in the world, supposedly, and while it was way too expensive for me, it got me thinking about how other people could take advantage of advertising into the sky. And it seems I'm not the only one.

The Google Maps thing is a happy accident... If you scroll to the right a bit, you'll see the Sunborn is right next to the London City Airport, so that message is targetted to the planes' passengers as they take off and land all day.

But it's a fair ol' hike from the (business) center of the Docklands (although easy to get to on the DLR)... It exists for people at the Excel conference centre, methinks.

And FWIW, a company I do some work for has the entire Sunborn booked for a week next year. Party on!
