How Web 2.0 Does Modal Dialogs (or The Lightbox.js Effect Begins To Take Off")

Wf Login

Most up to date Web developers will have seen Lightbox.js, the great effect where you can click on an image, the Web page 'dims', and the picture is blown up and shown modally in front of the page. It's a great effect and really looks good. However, it's not just for pictures, why not create full modal dialogs using it too?

The ever excellent Web developers site ParticleTree came up with some extensions to lightbox.js they called Lightbox Gone Wild! which are demonstrated here. However, I was particularly impressed with PJ Hyett's Lightbox Effect without Lightbox which takes a totally different route to the same destination, needing no lightbox.js code at all. This was then taken and improved in a version by Bruno from Feedmarker.

Excellent work guys! Now I just want to hook this up with window.alert and JavaScript alerts will become a lot cooler ;-)

We've been experimenting with this over the last week for a variety of functions. It seems pretty handy thus far!

Head on over to the newly re-written (in Ruby on Rails) Feedmarker to see my implementation of lightbox at work. And Feedmarker is now open source, you can see how it's done: http://blog.feedmarker.com/2006/02/27/feedmarker-reloaded/
