The biggest problem with Ruby on Rails right now is that there's too much work and not enough people to do it. Today I've been getting in touch with some of the Rails people I know and they're all booked up solid for the next few months. I'm getting e-mails on a weekly basis from businesses, entrepreneurs, etc, all looking for Rails coders, and I'm running out of people to recommend. I hate saying no to work myself, but FeedDigest and some of my other projects are taking up all of my time and attention at the moment (although I'm still doing Ruby and Rails consulting and training on the side - just not projects).
It's 20/20 hindsight, but if more people had started to learn Rails when only a few of us were raving about it a year to eighteen months ago, you'd be up to your ears in (interesting) projects right now :)

Not enough 18-month rails people?
I'm sure there are a lot of available professional developers pretty comfortable with rails but without a large portfolio to show for it yet.
*cough* :-)
Posted by: Ed at April 9, 2006 03:45 AMThat's very encouraging news. I'm challenging myself to learn Rails and AJAX in a year - my very first programming effort - ever. Maybe that's too long? Maybe I'm too ambitious? Thanks for your insight.
Posted by: Komodo Coder at April 9, 2006 06:15 AMI would hazard a guess that these are more proof-of-concept coding roles, due to the relative newness of Rails?
Posted by: justin flavin at April 10, 2006 01:04 PMI'd say it's about 50/50. Generally the bigger the company, the more likely it's proof-of-concept. I do know one largish company that has committed to RoR though.
Posted by: Peter Cooper at April 10, 2006 01:22 PMEven Bruce Perens is learning RoR according to this months interview in Linux Format.
Posted by: justin flavin at April 10, 2006 03:55 PMOh yeah, he is. He's been in #rubyonrails a few times. He was first in there about a year ago, but I don't know if he did much.
