The Sega Dreamcast: Perfect console for tightwads in 2006

Dreamcast

A couple of weeks ago I hinted that I might be getting a Dreamcast and, well, I did. It's an amazing machine. It's a bit noisy, but the graphics are good, it runs well, and the games are all quite fun. Supposedly it'll run Linux too, but I haven't got that far..

It's the perfect console for tightwads like me. You can buy games for a few pounds. I got Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and Toy Commander for £5 including postage from eBay. I also got fifteen games for free with the console, which only came to £45 including delivery. You can't argue with those figures, and the gameplay lives up to Sega's usual standards. Virtua Tennis 2K2 is absolutely amazing. It lends itself to my style of gameplay.. that is, I don't have time to play long games, but 15 minute stints are easy and fun.

If you can't be bothered with all the expensive, gameplay devoid nonsense out there right now, and just want a 'fun' games machine that doesn't cost the earth, go get a Dreamcast or a Nintendo DS. I think my £50 was well spent!

I couldn't agree more. Virtu Tennis 2 basically lives in my DC.

My recommendations:
Soul Calibur and Powerstone are awesome.
Shenmue 1 & 2 are incredibly engrosing and a very interesting experiment in adventure gaming.
Jet (Set|Grind) Radio is amazing addictive when you become at one with the controls.
Crazy Taxi rocks and Sonic Adventure is wicked.

*phew* Fracking awesome console.

also worth trying is the MAME emulator more than 20 arcade games which works surprisingly well and the old sega master system emulator with over 300 old classics.

An impressive haul you got there. May I recommend Shenmue? Oh, and while you're at it, visit http://the-dreamcast-junkyard.blogspot.com - yes, there are other people who are also tightwads!!

Hi Peter,

I love my Dreamcast, in fact i have 2... :) Bass fishing with the Rod is bonkers. Ikaruga is a fantastic shooter. Like you I like the "pick up and play games". I still love "House of the Dead" with the gun... There are some crazy Japanese games that you have to ummm, errr, get form somewhere... Look out for games by Treasure.
