L. Ron Hubbard and Book Soundtracks

I came across this interesting L. Ron Hubbard interview today. It's from 1983, but it covers some interesting ideas and concepts, mostly separate from Scientology and Dianetics. The most interesting one, to me, is his idea of having soundtracks for books.

I was reading a lengthy work written by a guy walking across the United States several years ago (it's available online at walkingtom.com) and had Sheryl Crow's "The Globe Sessions" on in the background. The CD totally melded with what I was reading and now I can't listen to that album without seeing wide open spaces, lonely Texas highways, and the bayous of Louisiana. I don't think Hubbard's idea of book soundtracks ever caught on, but I've felt a connection between reading and music for quite a while now, and the right background music always helps me get into a book a lot more than silence. Perhaps it's an idea whose time has come.. If I ever write a novel, I'll make sure to put together a soundtrack!

In other Scientology news (I promise this won't become a regular feature!), Dianetics was first published 56 years ago yesterday. This is supposedly one of the few holy days on the Scientologist calendar, so if your best friend is a Scientologist, wish them a happy anniversary!
