Some of My Favourite Songs, as found on YouTube

So I thought I'd look for some of my all-time favourite songs on YouTube. Enjoy!

(I have plenty of favourites that aren't on YouTube, but this isn't the time or place ;-))

Sloan - The Other Man

Sloan deserved to be absolutely massive, but their timing was all wrong. If they launched in the UK today, they'd be big, as they fit quite well into the new Indie wave. They're often criticized for sounding like a Beatles ripoff, but hey, what's wrong with sounding a little like the Beatles? This particular song has a good story. (And isn't that kid the spit of Charlie from the original Willy Wonka film?)

Hooverphonic - 2wicky

Hooverphonic are in my top five bands somewhere, possibly even at #1. They're a Belgian ambient pop band, although their sound has shifted a lot in the last ten years. They were a natural descendent of the whole Portishead thing, but they took it a lot further. 2wicky is probably their most recognizable tracks, although one of their earliest.

The Smiths - What Difference Does It Make

It's a criminal offence to have lived through the 80s and not have a Smiths record in your top ten. Morrissey and Marr were at their zenith with this one. There's no better way to spend a summer than with the curtains pulled listening to The Smiths ;-)

Paolo Conte - Via Con Me

This isn't a real video, but two French girls miming to the song. Still great to watch though and the song itself is just amazing. Paolo Conte is basically just an old Italian guy pumping out poetry and quirky Italian music, so.. it's great.

Rob Dougan - Furious Angels

This is standing in for one of my favourite albums, but this song is excellent none-the-less, although it doesn't work without the rest of the album. You might recognize this musical style from The Matrix, as Dougan did the soundtrack for it. It's a shame the whole 'fake soundtrack' genre isn't more popular. Note that this video is a major cut-down of the album version of this track which clocks in at almost eight minutes.

Nuyorican Soul - Black Gold Of The Sun

I don't think song actually has a real video, but this is a guy playing the piano part with the song in the background. Since it's one of my favorite songs of all time, it'll have to do.

Fiona Apple - Criminal

Fiona Apple puts a much needed mix of jazz, art, intellectualism and psychology into the angsty female music of the 1990s that Alanis Morrisette could have only dreamed of. With Jon Brion on production, her first two albums are unbeatable in their niche.

Elliott Smith - Son of Sam

Elliott Smith was like a spooky follow-on to John Lennon, sharing much of the same songwriting qualities and sound. It's just a shame that he killed himself a few years ago, as we've missed out on a whole ton of amazing music and only have a small back catalogue to draw from. Still, it's nearly all mindblowing.

Blink 182 - Stockholm Syndrome

This is another song standing in for an album, namely Blink 182's self-titled album. I've been ridiculed for liking it, but I just think it's a great package. This song is one of my favourite parts of it (the song bit, not the talking at the start).

Fleetwood Mac - Big Love

I probably deserve a lynching for this one, but yes, I like a few Fleetwood Mac songs, this one particularly. The whole Lindsey Buckingham / Stevie Nicks' era was the best. The video, however, is atrocious.
