Feisty under VMWare Fusion on OS X

The latest version of Ubuntu works a treat on OS X under VMWare Fusion.. but don’t even bother trying using Parallels. It’s atrocious. VMWare Fusion also needed some work which involved adding vga=740 to the bootflags, but after that it works great.

Why did you need to add vga=740? Mine seems to work out of the box.

It booted but no graphics. I did some searching and found several other people had the same issue and they recommended that fix. Of course, if you don’t need it, it’s all good :)

Once VMWare Tools is installed, by the way, it’s amazing. You even get automatic mouse switching from OS to OS which is nice.. only downside is some weird jerkiness with the mouse in Ubuntu..

    Hello Peter,

Why is it so bad under Parallels?

I am looking at buying a Macbook to replace my 17″ Powerbook so that I can run Parallels with XP and also run Linux.

Any ideas on the ideal setup in terms of partitioning of disk space and virtual environments?

Ideally, one would be able to use the XP, Linux and Mac OS X partitions both to boot and also as virtual environments under OS X.

(Glad that my post on the XML-RPC fix on Wordpress was able to help you out. The spare and elegant look of your weblog is great.)
